[The Kay Kaufman Shelemay Syrian-Jewish collection, 1984-1995].

The collection predominantly contains audio recordings of fieldwork conducted in Brooklyn, NY between 1984 and 1995. It also contains recordings and materials from Brooklyn, NY, Deal, NJ, Mexico City and Jerusalem made from 1986 through the mid-1990s. Moses Tawil and Joseph Saff were collaborators on the project. The collection documents the Syrian-Jewish paraliturgical genre pizmonim as it has evolved from the early 20th century. Series 1. Recordings of interviews and oral histories of male and female singers of pizmonim. Series 2. Audio recordings of live music sessions conducted specifically for the fieldwork collection. Series 3. Commercial and privately produced recordings.
